This means that in Flanders, the northern half of Belgium, some 21 million chickens a month are slaughtered.
Belgium exports poultry meat to more than 80 countries worldwide, making it one of the top 10 largest poultry meat exporters in the world.
A large volume of the fresh and frozen chicken meat is sold in neighbouring countries France, the Netherlands and Germany. But also outside the EU-27 a significant volume is exported. In 2024 this is about 25%, with African countries leading the way alongside the UK.
